US downloads of WeChat, Signal apps spike after Trump threatens ban – Software

Additional end users in the US downloaded chat app WeChat and its encrypted substitute Signal, following President Donald Trump threatened to ban WeChat, owned by Chinese organization Tencent, according to Sensor Tower info shared with Reuters on Thursday.

WeChat end users in the US rushed to put in the app in advance of it could disappear from the app shops.

Some others, in particular in China, sought alternatives like the encrypted Signal, owned by non-profit Signal Basis.

WeChat app downloads in the United States rose 41 per cent in a 6-working day average from the week prior to the US ban introduced final Thursday, according to Sensor Tower.

Signal app downloads in US and China app shops independently jumped by 30 per cent and 90 per cent respectively.

“Not only are alternatives like WhatsApp and Telegram formally blocked in China, but Signal has an inherent gain in that it is perfectly acknowledged for being strongly encrypted,” Stephanie Chan, Cellular Insights Strategist at Sensor Tower told Reuters.

Signal did not immediately answer to ask for for comment.

WeChat end users have also turned to another Tencent-owned chat app, QQ, as the ban did not specifically include this product or service.

Its downloads in the US have tripled in the earlier week, Sensor Tower info confirmed.
